old PC has email in Windows live. I cannot use the export tool as it needs to have outlook installed on the PC.

New PC has Windows 8 (Ugh) and Outlook 2013. I have copied the "Windows Mail" folder containing all the .eml files to the new PC (just on desktop).

I cannot figure out how to import these old eml files into Outlook.

Any ideas???

You could install a trial of outlook just for the export.

2003? I guess it would.
But wait, it is no problem to get 2010 trials from here http://www.mytechguide.org/7943/download-microsoft-office-2010/ (please note that they link Microsoft download servers).

that site really isn't clear and is extremely frustrating - it's all ads - I downloaded the obvious link, but it was a full version which needs a key...

If you can figure out the exact link for me to download and send to me... would be much appreciated...

You can use a trial key on that one. Got one in the office that I could provide tomorrow.

Take FD3YP-V4H9F-M9YDJ-TMM3Y-GKJVW for Office 2010 Pro or 22BHM-RBQPM-362B2-TB6M8-TH2YH for Office 2010 Home and business. [Folks, these are trial keys, don't worry].
However, I have no trial key for the download link I provided before which loads office 2010 Professional PLUS. But don't worry, on http://www.mytechguide.org/8040/download-microsoft-office-2010-free/ there are many versions, including home and business http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/01/802266152-10234526--NOA//office2010/X16-32007.exe and pro http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/01/802266156-10234441--NOA//office2010/X16-32007.exe

I downloaded and installed - the key was accepted... but to use it, it must activate online - it won't activate...

Any other ideas???

Anyone???

OK - I hit cancel and it let me in.

But now I go into Windows mail to export messages and I get the same error -  The export could not be performed. An error occurred while initializing MAPI.

Really? Don't know why, I guess it should work. Did you install outlook with all sub-elements? There will be import filters that have to be installed - it could be that those are not even in the outlook section but in the section of common office features or whatever office setup calls those. Have a look around, if unsure, install all of office common features and outlook.
well, thank you McKnife for trying - I do appreciate the attempt...
I did do the correct install - I'm assuming that microsoft is just not allowing anything but their new beast 2013 to be out there...

I did, however, find a solution. I had to buy a program from softspire to convert windows mail to a pst file. the mail portion worked great. there is a hitch in the contact conversion though - you have to manually map the fields - all are correct except a very important one - the name! it shows as an upsidedown question mark before fieldname NAME - so the auto mapping is confused. just map that to NAME and it works.

here is a link to the program I used - trial of 1st 10 emails is free, but full ver is $79

other recommendation did not work (Microsoft would not activate the old version's trial and maybe that's why the export would not work???)
I appreciate the effort though...
