windows media player .avi

I am using Windows Media Player version 9 (XP Pro).   I want to be able to play .avi and .mp4 files on Windows Media Player. I had the codec before but can't remember the name, I think it started with the letter K.  Can someone send me the proper link for this if you know, I would prefer to use this on WMP.   I downloaded another codec from CNET and installed a bunch of garbage apps and the codec didn't work.  Thanks.

I can't help you with a codec for WMP, but my suggestion is to use VLC Media Player:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

It is open source and free, and is the #1 downloaded software at SourceForge (more than 7 million downloads per week). It has the codecs built in, so it will play most video formats without needing to add codecs. I have never found a piece of media that it couldn't play. Unless you're totally wedded to WMP, I think you'll really like VLC. Regards, Joe
