Outlook 2010, Yahoo, IMAP: The UID of a message changed unexpectedly

Experts,

The computer is a new high end Dell notebook with Windows 7 as the OS, Office 2010, and some other applications.

Outlook has been configured with 2 email accounts, both using IMAP.  One is for a Yahoo email account, and the other is for a Gmail account.

Note that IMAP is the required mail protocol, because there are many folders with much data physically stored on the mail server, and there are a total of 3 email devices: 1) the computer, 2) a smart phone, 3) a tablet.  Using IMAP provides a grand unification, where POP cannot.

Note that Outlook can apparently successfully and reliably send and receive email through both accounts.

The problem is that Outlook is complaining, sometimes frequently, about a bug within the email server.  However, since mail is being successfully sent and received, these error messages are mainly cosmetic.

Here is the full text of the main error message that I am reporting:

Microsoft Outlook
! The UID of a message changed unexpectedly.  This typically
indicates a server bug.  Your program may not function properly
  after this.

  [OK]  [Details >>]

Here's another error message which is also being displayed, which I suspect is related:

Microsoft Outlook
The server responded: 'SERVERBUG] UID STORE Server error - Please try again later'.

  [OK]

Here's another new error which just occurred, which I also suspect is related:

Microsoft Outlook
! Failed to update headers.

  [OK]

From what I can piece together so far, this error seems to occur when one of two smart devices, which are both configured to use IMAP, polls for mail, and then Outlook polls for mail.  Note also that none of the other devices are making any kind of mail related complaint whatsoever.

The error only occurs with the Yahoo email account, and does not occur with the Gmail email account.

Thunderbird has been installed and configured to access the Yahoo email account via IMAP, and Thunderbird /does not/ produce any error messages.

I've done web research, and have found several reports that Yahoo does not support IMAP, and many reports showing how to configure a Yahoo email using IMAP (the same way, and this does word - but there are these infernal error messages which look something dire has happened, but apparently hasn't).  I have found very few references to this specific error message, and nothing so far has been constructive.

My current information is that Outlook is just plain pissy when it comes to Yahoo and IMAP.  But I'd really like either a better solution, or a clear direction that this can't work right (which I sincerely hope is not the case, because I expect that two heavy hitters in the email arena like MSFT and YHOO would at the very least play nice together in a standards kind of way - kind of like Police and Fire play well together)

Given that the chief user of this computer knows and likes Outlook, there is a strong interest for this problem to be solved in a way which includes Outlook.

An alternative solution, which doesn't solve the problem but prevents the problem from happening, is to migrate the data and the usage of the Yahoo account to a different service such as Gmail.

What I am hoping for is guidance on how to configure Outlook to be (more) tolerant of Yahoo - and /much/ more quiet, or guidance that Yahoo mail cannot be accessed properly using Outlook and other smart devices using IMAP, or a phone number for someone within the technical leadership of YHOO and have a conversation about this ...

Thank you in advance for your help.

ASKER

Thanks for the redirection to better areas.
Does the user have the latest Service Pack Installed For Office 2010?
Should be on SP1

There were quite a few Imap Issues that were resolved in this service pack

Lots of good responses arriving all at the same time ...

SP1.  Not sure, but I'll check.

Thanks for the link to additional information, but there is nothing in the notes which contains "imap" or anything Outlook which relates to email.

Re: server problem, that's my impression from what I've read.  The customer is metaphorically married to Outlook, so there either needs to be a solution to Outlook which makes it tolerant of Server impurity of the specification (which is Yahoo mail), or to declare victory and import the mail data into something else (eg: gmail)

This is a fresh installation onto a new computer.  There was strange behavior before, but the previous computer had enough problems and performance issues which prevented measuring this well.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your thoughts regarding this problem.
The problem has been solved by using a different email provider, rather than Yahoo.
@ChrisEddy - Thanks and I was happy to help you with this.
