unable to uninstall iTunes within Windows XP SP3
Hi Everyone,

I am needing to help a friend with uninstalling iTunes within a Windows XP SP3 desktop environment.  When an attempt is made to carry out this task within the Add/Remove area of Control Panel, I get the following messages:  A window with the title of Windows Installer appears suggesting the feature I am trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.  Click OK or try again, or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package iTunes.msi in the box below: c: \Documents and Settings\Daniel\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Apple Software Update\. ... Out beside of all of this information, there is also a Browse button to navigate to an alternative path.

At this point, I am unsure on how to proceed with this problem.  Any suggestions and guidance given to resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated.  I do need to have iTunes uninstalled because it is obviously corrupted because it does not appear on the desktop or within the All Programs list within the Start menu.

Thanks so much in advance for any help given to this concern.

           George

CC  Cleaner is the best tool to uninstall and clear the registry entries.

Reinstall iTunes (by downloading it from Apple, then running the installer); and then uninstall it.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks so much for the insightful suggestions given in addition to the resourceful links which address my concern.  After reviewing everything, I do have a few followup questions before starting this troubleshooting session.  If there are any pre-existing songs on the hard drive which are normally on playback using iTunes, will they be deleted?  Perhaps iTunes will give a warning about any pre-existing music files before the uninstallation begins.  Since I am unsure in terms of whether there are any music files on the hard drive, is there a default path or location which has a folder that stores such files?  Perhaps I can backup any pre-existing music files before starting any kind of uninstallation procedures.

Any feedback given to these followup questions will be greatly appreciated.

             Thank you

Uninstalling iTunes in the normal fashion will not delete your music.  Deleting it using a utility like Revo Uninstaller (which gives you an opportunity to delete iTunes-related folders) may delete your music, if you answer the questions "incorrectly" since music is often stored in a folder which is a subfolder of the iTunes folder.

Where your music is actually stored depends entirely on how you have set things up.  If iTunes is organizing your music (which is set in iTunes preferences), then your music is stored in the folder indicated in your iTunes preferences.  If not, your music could be scattered throughout your hard drive.

Hi Everyone,

Using the link http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes11/041-1850.20121129.S2Ux2/iTunesSetup.exe, I downloaded and attempted to install the 32-bit version of iTunes.  Unfortunately, I got the following message when an installation was attempted: A later version of iTunes is already installed on this computer.

With respect to the 3rd party utilities, I got the following error message: A window with the title of Windows Installer appears suggesting the feature I am trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.   This message was noted each time an uninstallation of iTunes was attempted within both,  Revo Uninstaller and Tuneup uninstall manager.

I am wondering if perhaps the Windows Installer might possibly be corrupt.  Assuming this to be true, would I have problems installing and uninstalling other applications?  However, I am not having any problems installing and uninstalling applications.  The problem is only observed whenever I attempt to uninstall iTunes.

I am so sorry, but, I will need further guidance in resolving this issue.  Thanks so much in advance for everyone's continued willingness and patience to find a solution to this rather tricky problem.

              Thank you

Hi Everyone,

At this point, I need to pause and give some updates.  First, I need to talk about Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 7.2 .  This utility did uninstall iTunes because it is no longer within the Add/Remove Programs list within Control Panel.  However, I am still experiencing issues with the downloaded 32 bit iTunes installation file (v. 11.0.0.163).  The message reads as follows:  iTunes Installer completed... Errors occurred during installation before iTunes could be configured.  Your system has not been modified.  To complete installation, run the installer again.... When I do that, I get the same message.

With respect to the pre-existing older iTunes installation file (v. 10.6.0.40) which is believed to have been used for the corrupted iTunes, I get the following message when I attemp an install using it.  iTunes installer was interrupted before the requested operations of iTunes could be completed.

About the program Revo uninstaller, I dd let it run through its scans.  However, I never deleted anything it found.  Now, when I open it again, it opens up with a menu of options.  Since I am new to this program, can you provide the necessary steps for getting back to moderate mode and re-executing the scans?  Also, what are the steps in deleting the invalid registry entries and files this utility reports?

            Thank you.

Hi Everyone,

Just on a sidenote, Norton utilities is running in the background.  Is it possible this utiilty could somehow be causing interference with the installation?

          George

Avatar of Skyler KincaidSkyler Kincaid🇺🇸

No it is probably not interfering with the installation.

If you used the link I sent for Revo then what you will do is:

1. Select iTunes from the list of applications and the select Uninstall from the top menu bar
2. Select Moderate when it prompts for what uninstall mode you want
3. It will then launch the built in installer which you can cancel because it will error out anyway
4. Now it will scan for files and registry entries, click next when it finishes scanning
5. Hit Select All and then Hit Delete for registry entries
6. Do the same thing for the files it found.
7. Reboot your computer when it is finished
8. Try the installation again

If you just download the latest version of iTunes at the link terencino provided and install that, it will most likely take care of your problem.

Hi Everyone,

I want to add a comment about the suggestion to retry Revo Uninstaller.  After running Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 7.2, I no longer see iTunes within the list of applications which can be uninstalled.

At the moment, I am at work.  Once I get home, I will download the latest version of iTunes 32 bit version given within the link http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes11/041-9795.20130220.Xde43/iTunesSetup.exe given by terencino.  Hopefully, this will resolve this issue and provide closure.

Assuming this suggestion does not resolve the issue, are there any other options which can be entertained?  Of course, I am fairly sure a wipe and reload of the entire hard drive would allow for the successful installation of iTunes seeing that this problem is most likely caused by a corrupted registry file.  However, I would like to avoid this option if possible by finding a fix for it.  Just out of curiousity, is there any other multimedia application which is equivalent to iTunes just in case a work around might be in order?

In the meantime, I am confident a solution to this dilemna will be discovered.  Perhaps when I get home and download & install the latest version of iTunes, this situation will be resolved.

Thanks so much in advance for everyone's eagerness and willingness in seeking a solution to the inability of iTunes to install and configure itself properly.

I have every expectation that downloading and running the latest itunes install will solve your problem.  If it does not, the next step will be guided by the specific error message that you get when the installation fails... it makes a lot more sense to provide advice based on that error than to speculate, now, what problem you MIGHT run into.

Good luck George. Despite it many faults there is nothing quite like iTunes on the market for managing your Apple purchases. I use it mostly to add lyrics to songs, for some reason this is unbelievably difficult or not possible with other applications. It's not particularly easy with iTunes either.

Hi Everyone,

I am very pleased to say the installation finally went through using the latest version of iTunes located at http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes11/041-9795.20130220.Xde43/iTunesSetup.exe provided by Terry.  However, I do have a followup question regarding an error message noted during the installation process.  While I can not remember word by word the error message, I do recall the message indicating that Bonjour could not be installed.  Following this error message, it did prompt me to carry out a reinstall in order to have Bonjour.  At any rate, I proceeded with the finalization of the iTunes installation which was successful because it does open now.  It did import all music and artwork.  Given all of this, I never did backup to resolve the issue with Bonjour.  Is Bonjour something which is absolutely needed to maintain the functionality of iTunes?  Or, is this an "optional" component which can be left out?

Any feedback given to this followup question will be greatly appreciated.

              Thank you

              George

Bonjour is what apple uses to enable iTunes to find other Apple devices on your network, and other PCs with iTunes loaded.  You would need it if you're using an AppleTV, or streaming music from the itunes library on one of your machines to another machine using iTunes sharing capability. You'd also want it to work if you'll be syncing wirelessly to an iPhone, iPad or iPod over your wireless network.  Bonjour is also needed for wireless printing to an Apple enabled wireless printer.

If you won't be doing anything like that, Bonjour won't be missed.

Avatar of Skyler KincaidSkyler Kincaid🇺🇸

I agree with skahan. Be happy with iTunes being installed and Bonjour can be left alone.

Here is a list of some of things Bonjour does and I am guessing you won't miss any of them:

Hi Everyone,

Thanks so much for the insightful feedback given to this post in addition to the useful links.  I am very pleased to say this problem is now resolved.  Using the program Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 7.2 as recommended by Terry,  I was able to remove the corrupted installation of iTunes.  This was confirmed because I no longer saw iTunes within the list of Add/Remove Programs within Control Panel following the execution of this utility.  Just for good measure, I also ran CCleaner to clear out any invalid entries within the registry.

Following these steps, I proceeded to download the latest 32-bit version of iTunes using the link http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes11/041-9795.20130220.Xde43/iTunesSetup.exe provided by Terry.  Finally, I was able to complete the installation and configuration of iTunes using the latest version of iTunes.  During installation, I never saw an option to Remove or Repair the corrupted version of iTunes.  Most likely it was no longer present following the use of Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 7.2 and CCleaner.

In closing, many thanks once again to everyone who provided feedback to this concern.  All of the insightful suggestions given certainly did keep my options of resolving this concern open and very much alive.

            Thanks again.

Multimedia applications are those programs that integrate more than one media at a time; browsers are the most obvious. However, the term has come to include the use of programs that enable the use of any component that isn’t simple text and static graphics, such as audio, video, animation, virtual reality, conferencing and monitoring.
