Measuring conversion rates for a iPhone app?

I have a WordPress website and am considering doing paid advertising on Google. I assume that for about 20 cents per click I could drive traffic to my site. I use Google Analytics but do not yet have Heat Maps configured.

My site has a "Buy Now" button. How do I measure the success rate of those ads in terms of sales of my app? I can not get any bit of sales data from Apple.  Must I presume that a visitor coming from a Google Ad who clicks Buy Now is a conversion? Or there a concrete way to know if they purchased the app?

What are the general price ranges for paid advertising?

Thanks.

Do you have sales?  Or maybe it just takes time to show up and you get a monthly report?

The way GA works is you create a page and link that goes to the app store.  In GA you make a goal and put a price on that goal and you have to make the assumption that x% make a purchase.

At the end of the month you just need to figure out the total you have spent on EVERYTHING then match that to your monthly sales.

The "heat" map is just to look cool.  Pay attention to what brings people to your site, where they leave and if they click through.

.01 per click to $100 per click.  This is a function of supply, demand, competition and  how well  your landing page is.

I have very small sales and get those reports. What I meant was I can not get any data about the origins of those sales, whether they came from my site or not.

I need to understand GA better I guess. I have a Buy Now button which goes to the App Store. Must I configure this in GA as the sales button? How can GA determine of the user clicked by Buy Now button then canceled out of the purchase at iTunes?

How does the quality of my landing page impact the cost of the click ad?

One way to track a click using only GA is to make a page that redirects to the app store.  Then from anyplace on your site where you have a link to the app store, link to the this page on your site that redirects to the app store.  If you have links on different pages you can track in more detail by using a querystring like http://www.mysite.com/redirectpage/?something=something or  http://www.mysite.com/redirectpage/index.html?something=something.  If you are good with serverside code like php or asp, you can use that to help convert your querystrings to something more useful.

Google adwords looks easy but is more complex when you get into it.   In brief, if you have 3 pages on your site 1) Home page 2) A page about beer 3) A page about wine.     You create two ads.  One that links to your home page titled "buy beer and wine" and your home page just has images of beer and wine.  The 2nd ad is titled "Buy Beer" and links to your beer page.  Your beer page is rich with great content about beer, making beer, drinking beer, different kinds of beer, beer products...  Which ad do you think will do better?

Adwords works just like seo.   The better your landing page, the easier it will be to compete for ad placement and probably the better your conversions will be.
