Hi,

Is it easy to place text input boxes in a canvas with JS or is it easier to use html input boxes and the canvas separately?

I need an textbox to enter numbers and the canvas to process this information and make calculations.

It's definitely better, easier and much more semantic to use input boxes outside of the canvas area. The canvas element is used to draw graphics and using it to draw other HTML elements is just a bad idea all the way around.
