I'm using asterisk now - it has freepbx - it was installed last week and everything's pretty much up to date.<br />
I use x-lite and bria on the workstations and mobiles. I don't really care about the mobiles tho.<br />

I've looked around but not found an answer to this question....<br />
I'd like to have IM using the same &quot;account&quot; as our asterisk extensions, so the guys can IM each other from their soft phones. - it can then do online / offline and presence all in once place.<br />
I really don't want to have to maintain an additional set of accounts for each user &nbsp;and have them manage 2 sets of contacts, 2 apps and 2 things to remember each time they're away or back.<br />
I'm sure there must be some apps / something out there to make this happen?<br />

Asterisk and IM

IP telephony (Internet Protocol telephony) is a general term for the technologies that use the Internet Protocol's packet-switched connections to exchange voice, fax, and other forms of information that have traditionally been carried over the dedicated circuit-switched connections of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). IP Telephony

Voice Over IP

Instant messaging (IM) is a type of online chat that offers real-time text transmission over the Internet. A LAN messenger operates in a similar way over a local area network. More advanced instant messaging can add file transfer, clickable hyperlinks, Voice over IP, or video chat. Non-IM types of chat include multicast transmission, usually referred to as "chat rooms". Depending on the IM protocol, the technical architecture can be peer-to-peer (direct point-to-point transmission) or client-server (a central server retransmits messages from the sender to the communication device).
