I have looked into this, and it looks very complicated. I need to layout wiring for small building projects in Visio 2013. To help me estimate cost and time, I layout wire connections between points on a diagram, say between a wiring closet and a telephone jack on the other side of the building.

I need to be able to have an automatic routable connector or wire stencil that displays the connection's length as text above the line, and automatically updates the length displayed when the connector is modified, lengthened, shortened.

I need concrete instructions on how to do this (I think a stencil with this functionality will do)

Hi BBT,

If you are using the Dynamic Connector for your routing, do this:

1. Drop a connector on the page
2. Double-click or press F2 to get into text-edit mode
3. Go to Insert > Field
4. Select Custom Formula from the bottom of the Category list
5. Enter =PATHLENGTH(Geometry1.Path)

That will display the length of the connector in inches, without units in the text of the connector. You could convert like this:

Feet:
=PATHLENGTH(Geometry1.Path)/12

Cm:
=PATHLENGTH(Geometry1.Path)*2.54

You get the idea.

Drag the shape to a new stencil. You can rename the connector "Wire with Length" or something similar. Or you can just do the insert field trick for any shape on the page.
