How to improve the search engine-rating?

Dear Experts

My employer wants me to increase our web-presence for the website (www.goldwyncareers.com) with a higher placement in the search machines.

I already read some things about seo (search engine optimisation) and also did a some recommended things namely:

- Register our website for the google webmaster tools site to get crawler-errors
- Adding hyperlinks from our other sites to this particular one
- Asking other relevant sites to add our link

However I'm still not sure about the meta-tags since the big search engines don't use them anymore. But it still seems to be recommended to implement them anyway. Why is that the case?

Do you guys have any other suggestions how I can improve the rating of our website?

Thank you for your suggestions in advance!

@padas

First of all, thank you for your fast and extensive feedback!

I still have some questions about what you've said:

"SEO" is not what it was.  Today it is about content.  Of course you want well formed html as this is one of many factors.  I would start by getting your html taken care of.  Click here to see  http://validator.w3.org

Since we use a cms (Joomla!) most of these html-errors are generated. Should I still look into them?

Avoid "tricks" and get links fast schemes.

I'm not quite sure what you mean with get links fast schemes. It is allowed to ask some well-known websites (some of which host career fairs) to put up a link, isn't it?

Send out monthly or twice monthly notes.  Keep your content fresh.

We also look currently into that, would you recommend to publish the notes on the website itself or would it be better to just have some sort of newsletter archive online?

I would say more importantly is getting more jobs posted though

I have to convince my co-workers first that the traffic will improve, before they "waste" their time uploading jobs. But with the good tips I received from you this won't be much of a problem!

On a more general note:

I also want to implement a much needed advanced search but I'm not quite sure where to place it. The two most logical solutions would be on the left side on all pages or on the top of the search page.

Wow, that is your lifeblood and the main reason people would go to your site.

I would make your advance search part of the main search.
Thank you for your great help, now I have some work to do ;-)
