I need to create an Asset Library in SharePoint and was looking for a recommendation as to what type of site to create....  Are there any cool templates out there for a robust doc management historical site.

I'm assuming SharePoint 2010?

An "asset library" is just a regular document library with a special content type added to it.  No specific template is needed to use them.

This is a popular template to use specifically for document stuff:  http://sharepoint-tutorial.net/post/2011/06/16/sharepoint-template-document-workspace.aspx
