What you want is full duplex on both ends.  If this is newer cisco gear it should autonegotiate fine, but if its older gear it should be hard coded.

If one side is hard-coded the other side needs to be hard-coded to match it.  So if you configure speed 100 duplex full on the router, then you need to configure the same thing on the switch port.

So it looks like the router is half duplex.  So change the router to full duplex.  Post the config of the router and switch port if you are still having problems.

Ahh.. really old router only supports 10baseT.

So speed is definitely not an option.

So then if it only supports half duplex you will need to configure the switch port.

Was the cdp duplex mismatch statements from the router or switch log?  I am guessing the router log however it shows two different swtich ports.. fa0/23 and gig0/1.  You change was on fa0/4.

What kind of switch is this?  What are the actual ports on the switch and router.  If you do a show interfaces status on the switch port what is the status?  If it is err-disabled you will need to do a shut / no shut on the port.

Dear kenboonejr

is a very old router ... when i  connect my ethernet0 to router i get the following error to 3com switch but in this case the ethernet is up up
1d02h: %CDP-4-DUPLEX_MISMATCH: duplex mismatch discovered on Ethernet0 (not full
duplex), with Switch FastEthernet0/23 (full duplex).

but when i connect the ethernet0 to cisco switch i get this error
1d02h: %PQUICC-1-LOSTCARR: Unit 0, lost carrier. Transceiver problem?

in the first one no problem only when i connect to switch cisco
i get this error :1d02h: %PQUICC-1-LOSTCARR: Unit 0, lost carrier. Transceiver problem?

Router to switch should be straight cable.

So when connecting to cisco switch use half duplex on the cisco switch.  If that doesn't work, set the speed and duplex to auto on the switch port and see if that helps.

Router to switch would be straight through cable.

The 805 router ethernet port is compatible with any 10/100MB device. It has always worked for us in auto/auto mode with 3com and cisco devices.

Unless it's a cable or a physical hardware issue, there is no command or troubleshooting  that will save you from this.
