Help writing Java - for Orion Rhapsody

I'm new to JavaScript - have zero experience.

I am creating an interface in a tool called Rhapsody - by Orion.  There is a place to manipulate fields using JavaScript.  I found the attached template on the Rhapsody website.

I want to extract values from a field and place it back in the same field.

The data element I want is 'PID.18'
Segment = PID
Field = 18
next.setField("PID/PatientAccountNumber - not sure what else to put...

I want to change the field using Right and Left functions.  The expression would look like this in another program - like Excel: Left(PID.18,1)+Right(PID.18,7).  Rhapsody has built in string functions of StrLeft and StrRight.

Can anyone help me write this in JavaScript?  I know this is a stretch because it's a different program.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Integrating HL7 based interfaces with Javascript is not very straight forward.  I don't know if there are any Experts on the site famliar with Rhapsody, so you might want to see if you can get some assistance from http://www.orionhealth.com/support/ where they appear to have pretty extensive documentation and a forum.
