Windows 8 Modern UI apps do not work

Hello experts.  I have a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet that I really love.  Several of us are test diving these to roll out to company users.  However, I ran across an issue that is annoying to the point that I can't recommend this OS/Table to anyone.

In many cases, apps that are installed from the App Store and meant for the Modern UI side (Metro) simply do not work at all.  The app downloads and installs with no errors but when you attempt to open it, you get a blue screen (not a BSOD) and no functionality.

Does anyone know why this happens and is there a remedy?  Thanks in advance.

No - this happens with multiple apps, including the LifeCam app that comes with Windows 8.  I called Microsoft and they have no idea (at least the techs I spoke with didn't).  They recommended doing a refresh and a restore of the OS.  It's my goal to leave that option as a last resort only.

That last resort thought... leave it. Errors come and go, many will never be fully cleared up. So take an image of the current system, do a refresh and retry, If gone: good. If not, you can replay your image (or windows backup).

But you have at least to try it or try it on another win8 machine, it won't be surface-specific.

Major firmware update from Microsoft for the Surface tablet seems to have done the trick.  I did take an image just in case.
