Need explanation on how a call to hunt pilot then redirected to vm is handled

Hi Experts,

I am new to the voice world. I am just having hard time understanding on how a call to a hunt pilot then redirected to vm is handled.

Currently a call to a hunt pilot number will be redirected to voicemail pilot number on no answer, then this voicemail pilot contains whole bunch of voicemail ports as its directory number. That is all I have discovered so far. I just do not see any correlation between this hunt pilot number and its own voicemail box.

Can someone please shed some light on this? Much appreciated.

The incoming call comes in on a phone number.  This number (the extension they dialed) is contained within the information about the call.
When you pass the call from your extension to the voice mail number the voice mail system is clever enough to look at this number and forward it to that mail box.

SO if I ring
555-555-2305     (Looking to reach the person on that number)
and the phone system has the range 2300 - 2399

It rings and rings (or that number is busy).  It then hunts to the voice mail number (say 2399) and that looks at the original number and stores it in that mail box.

You can even go a stage further and have two forwards,

You ring in on 555-555-2305
If busy or no answer it forwards to a PA on 2309
and if they are busy or no answer it goes to voice mail.
The voice mail system will still use the original number - so if though it was ringing on 2309 before it got diverted, it will store it in 2305
