ASP.NET Membership - Best Practices

I am converting our existing website to the .net platform.  All our data resides on a SQL server, while our web files are on another server.  Is it best to create Microsoft's membership directly on the SQL server to be stored and managed along with the user's data?  Or is it best to create the membership's on the SQL.mdf database file stored on the web server and keep the member data on the separate SQL server?

Membership data itself should be pretty light so I don't see any reason to store it in another instance on the web server.  Keeping everything in one place makes management (backups, etc) easier as well.
