See attached file for install procedure, or look here for the guide:
https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/STASH/Installing+Stash+on+Linux+and+Mac

In the end I deleted Stash and started over again. I had to do this change to setenv.sh:
https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/STASHKB/OpenJDK+64-Bit+Server+VM+is+an+unsupported+JVM

After that was done, setenv.sh gave this output:
# ./setenv.sh
Detecting JVM PermGen support...
./permgen.sh: line 15: /bin/setclasspath.sh: No such file or directory
./permgen.sh: line 16: /bin/setclasspath.sh: No such file or directory
PermGen switch is supported. Setting to 256m\n
Using STASH_HOME:      /home/home-stash

# ./start-stash.sh
To run Stash in the foreground, start the server with start-stash.sh -fg
Starting Atlassian Stash as current user

Detecting JVM PermGen support...
PermGen switch is supported. Setting to 256m

Using STASH_HOME:      /home/home-stash
Using CATALINA_BASE:   /home/home-stash
Using CATALINA_HOME:   /home/home-stash
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /home/home-stash/temp
Using JRE_HOME:        /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre
Using CLASSPATH:       /home/home-stash/bin/bootstrap.jar:/home/home-stash/bin/tomcat-juli.jar
Using CATALINA_PID:    /home/home-stash/work/catalina.pid

Success! You can now use Stash at the following address:

http://localhost:7990/

If you encounter issues starting or stopping Atlassian Stash, please see the Troubleshooting guide at:

http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/STASH/Installation+Troubleshooting+Guide

When running http://ip-addr:7990/ I get:
A fatal error has occurred

The following problem occurred which prevents Atlassian Stash from starting correctly:

The Spring WebApplicationContext could not be started

in the atlassian-stash.log I find the following:

I installed Tomcat with the Ubuntu installation. This was Tomcat 6. I uninstalled Java and Tomcat 6, then Installed Java version 1.7 and Tomcat 7 using this guide: http://hendrelouw73.wordpress.com/2012/11/14/how-to-install-apache-tomcat-7-0-30-on-ubuntu-12-10-linux/

That fixed the problem
