How to load digital camera images to pc?

I'm using a friend's computer and I am not getting the same result when I plug my digital camera into the USB port. When plugged in, the camera is set on
drive disk" and I click ok on the camera and a window is supposed to open to show the loading of the images to the system. I'm hearing the specific sound that I hear on my own pc, but the window never opens. Since this is the first time using this camera on this computer, Windows Vista did recognize the device as a new device and loaded the driver.
With that part complete, I can not seem to get the images loaded. On my system a window opens up, it shows how many images are being uploaded and in what folder they are to be found. Once finished there is a sound alert and the camera is unplugged from the computer.

Some camera's need software installed on the PC from the camera's manufacturer to get access to the pictures. So first check whether you need to install such a tool.

Otherwise open "Computer". If the camera is properly recognized as an external HD on the PC, a new drive should show up. Open that drive and the folder / pictures should be visible. You should then be able to copy them to the local disk of the PC.
