Adding article-specific CSS in Joomla 3.1.1

I am new to Joomla, and have created my first template.  It is responding appropriately.  Right now, there is only a home page.  There will eventually be more content, and each page is likely to need its own styling.  I'd rather not dump all the page-specific CSS into the main template.css file.  How can I tell Joomla to link to CSS file "thispage.css" from a particular article?

I need to know if this is possible with a default installation.

I think this would be possible with the default installation, but it would require changing or adding some code.

Take a look at this free extension:

This does what I want, but I would certainly prefer to have the CSS attach directly to the article, instead of having to split the management between the article and a module.  I'm guessing there is no functionality inside Joomla core to handle this?

I don't like the administration this will require to manage a site with hundreds of pages, but it is what it is.

Any other suggestions?
