Cannot connect to SQL Server 2012 on Windows 2012 from Windows 8 Client

I have a standalone Windows Server 2012 machine running SQL Server 2012.

I am trying to create a UDL file on my Windows 8 machine. I have created a blank file called test.udl and double clicked on it.

I put in the details as per the first image below, and click on drill down arrow for the "Select the database on the server:" option, and first of all get the error as shown in image 2 and then the dialog shown in image 3.

I have turned off the firewall on the Windows Server, but it still does not work. It doesn't work if I use the IP address of the server either.

If I perform the same procedure on the Windows Server itself, then everything works OK.

Any ideas please?

Kindly try to enable Remote connections on SQL Server by performing the list of steps mentioned below:

Performing above should help fix the issue..

Remote connections on SQL Server were already enabled, but TCPIP connections on MSSQLSERVER were not!

Everything is working now.

is the TCP/IP protocol in the SQL Configuration tool on the server?
