Hi,

What is a good, reliable and preferably free tool or method to view word 2003-2007-2010 documents online on a webpage, like in an iframe?

Thanks!

You may find that a docx is just a doc, but encoded in the form of a zip archive.  You might be able to unzip and treat the resulting file like a doc.  I have never done this so I do not have a teaching example, but it seems like it might be a promising thing to pursue.

No, it's not that simple.  I have a 'docx' that contains less than 1k of text but the 'docx' file is 49,118 bytes.  Looking at it in Filealyzer, it has a lot of 'word/????.xml' like 'word/document.xml' and 'word/theme/theme1.xml' followed by PK which is usually the signature for PKzip.  It's not just a single Zip file but apparently a lot of little sections containing all the usual Microsoft formatting info whether you need it or not.

Hmm the Google file-viewer also doesn't open docx. (Although it says it does support it). On the other hand, dropbox does have  a tool to view docx in the browser.

Here is a free tool for viewing docx in Firefox. This one can convert the file to html to if you wish. I can't find any cross browser solutions for you though.

AddType application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document docx

to your htaccess!
