Hardware raid - logical

Experts,

I have create one logical drive with only 1 hard drive 500gb. Can I add another drive and recreate the raid to 1? mirror. Will this erase the existing data?

I'm using HP DL320e gen 8 using controller B120 RAID

I have esxi 5.1 installed with a couple of VMs.

Adding a HDD to any raid array will require you to setup a completely different array setup on the controller.  This in turn will remove any and all data from the drives completely.  I recommend a complete system backup and testing it before attempting this.

If you have Flash Backed Write Cache you can perform online RAID level migration from RAID 0 to RAID 1 with HP's Dynamic Smart Array Controllers (Intel chipset RAID with HP's RAID algorithms), that's assuming RAID was enabled to start with. If not then indeed it's backup time, you could just take a raw image with gparted and restore it again.

You could also use a backup program called veeam.  Its free for full backups but requires a windows box to do the backups.  It also only backs up the vm's individually.
