Computers on home network can't see each other

I have a laptop running Win8 and a desktop running Win7 Pro. I'm trying to set up RDC between the two and have found that neither computer can find the other on the network (Linksys wireless). Both are connected to the router, but neither can ping the other either by name or by IP address. Any suggestions?
