Hi  Ramante,

I have written an entire upgrade guide on just this topic...
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Digital_Living/Hardware/Cell_Phones/A_8611-Upgrade-guide-for-Android-users.html

Please read it, and then I would be happy to help with any issues or questions you still have during the process.

Cheers,

Great Info!!!!

But noticed a very bad news, POP3 emails accounts area not in no way backed up (super bad news).  We have 6 emails accounts on the Samsung S3.

Ok, prior placing the question, we have spent all day (almost) searching for a good backup apps.  We did see carbon, MyBackup Root, Titanium Backup Pro, SmartSwitch (but just transfer to a phone),  Kies, 'The Samsung Galaxy Unified Toolkit', and others that their names slips my mind (all of these their latest version).  Unfortunately, some were "trial" and after installing it said "only 5 accounts" and others were just too complex ('The Samsung Galaxy Unified Toolkit' one of them).

One conclusion after all this search, is what you said: no POP3 backup/restore found (and we would like at least have the received email  restore to the s4).   Then comes "Root"; don't know what it means and if our s3 is "rooted" or not.

Prior receiving your answer, we settled on one (actually right now seems to be performing): Kies (let's see how it does and then restore it to s4).

We would like an apps, free and that can backup the entire phone and install it on the new one.

Note:
We also received our iPhone 5 and backing iPhone 4s and restoring iPhone 5 was a breeze, including all POP3 accounts, and emails received.  Is there anything similar as iTunes?

For better or for worse, there's nothing like iTunes for Android. iTunes is based around an absolutely controlled and standardized operating system and user experience on identical hardware from one manufacturer. Android is based around an operating system that's available for tweaking and customization by different manufacturers (and others).

Rooting the phone means essentially taking off the protections against customization by users, so you can go deeper into the operating system. A good backup on a rooted phone should be able to back up and restore pop3 email, but the problem, as you have found, is that the system is complex enough that some times parts are missed.

Let me know how Kies does on the restore, I'd love to have a tool I can recommend to others if it works for you.

So strange... just checked where Kies is at and found this (for some reason it place an X on section already backed up):

Are you familiar with this? Are we doing something wrong?

kies2
Amost done and it seems to reset the cycle again....????

And it is just there, halted, nothing moving.... we lost all that time backing up?

I don't have Samsung devices, so I have not used Kies. In doing a quick search, it appears that you aren't the only one to have problems with Kies completing a backup. I'm not sure what to suggest - I presume you are using the latest version of Kies?

I don't know, then, other than trying to start again. Turn phone all the way off, then back on, turn off as many apps as possible, and try it again.

Well it backed partially, the question is now, when backing up the other options, how to restore all to new s4?

We have successfully backed up the s3 using Kies.  Unfortunately, the backup halted on one part, but we made a second backup of that section and now we have backed uop the s3 device with 2 backups.

Now we need to restore to the s4.

What is the best way to go about this?

The following are the official steps from Samsong:

Step 1: Connect the device to your computer and launch Kies.

Step 2: Once Kies has recognized the device, click the Backup/Restore tab , this time Click the Restore tab.

Step 3: Select the data you want to restore, and make sure you want to restore the backup to your device.
This is your last chance to back out of the restore. If you’re sure you want to restore your data, click Next.

Step 4: Once the restore completes, you’ll see a confirmation dialog box, and your device will reboot.

The reality is you will best be served by selecting an item at a time, and restoring it, and then going through the process again. Also, if you aren't restoring to an identical device, you may not be able to restore everything.

Good luck! If this doesn't work, Titanium Pro or something similar may be an option.

Did nothing restore? Or were you able to restore some things, but not others?

Yes, but partially.  For some reason the application part halted.  Now it was totally successful backup of all but again, since it halts, we back up each area by separate

Now how can we restore properly.

Have you been able to restore anything at all?

Yes and also partially.  For example of something that happened: when backing  mails in s3, it displayed it backed up, and in the restore process in s4, it went with no error;, we assumed all went well.  But when checking, the emails were not complete.

We have a complete backup of s3 but in several files or several backup process because every time we did a full backup (by selecting all), it always failed.

I wish I had better news for you, but my guess is you aren't ever going to get to where you want to be. You might get better results by rooting the phone (and then using Titanium Backup Pro), but that carries risks of turning it into a worthless brick, too.

The reality is that backup of phones is still imperfect at best, and then restoring a backup onto a different device is iffy as well.

Unfortunately, we don't have the s3 anymore.  Since we made successful backup of every part individually we assume that we can get rid of the s3.

We have backups how can titanium backup be of help.  Please advice on this info.

Titanium backup would only be useful for backing up from the S3. Since you have the kies backups from the S3, what happens if you try to restore a second time for the same type of files?
