Sharepoint 3.0 to SQL 2012

Hi,

I need to know if i can migrate sharepoint (WSS 3.0) Databases from SQL 2008 to SQL 2012? I have been told i have to upgrade sharepoint (WSS 3.0) to Sharepoint 2010 foundation(64bits) before i can do this due to incompatability with SQL 2012 .

Is this true and if so, is there an alternative way of getting Databases onto SQL2012?
