i have a web based POS system. my customer wants to add a display pole to the point of sale system.

i don't know if i can write code to send total price due to the display unit using asp.net through a chrome browser. i know this is easy with a windows application.

i am wondering if there is a special device for web based POS display units and sample code to accomplish this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

From what i have read so far, this is possible through javascript working with browser plugins.  so i may have to post this question into a different subject area rather than asp.net and c#

my preferred browser is chrome. i heard there is a way to control serial ports and usb ports using chrome plugins and javascript. does anyone have any experience with this type of issue?

i finally figured out a solution. thanks for all your help. i ended up building a webservice that installs to the client computer.  i couldn't call exe from javascript in chrome, which makes sense for security reasons.

Thats why i ended up with a windows service that can be called via http protocol.  And the client installs this once on their computer like they will install a device driver.

My web application makes calls to this service passing the data to the service. the service has all the code to talk to the customer display pole passing the data sent by the javascript call.

works like a charm!
