by default the number of results returned by a Sharepoint 2013 search only returns only 10 results. How / where can I change that to increase that number.

Do a search so you get some results on the next page. Put the results page into edit mode. Select the webpart that holds the results and click edit webpart. Look through the properties to find the section that deals with results per page

There is no way to put the search result page into edit mode as you would do with otherpages (e.g. Settings / Edit page)

Ahh is this the default search results page from the root of the site rather than a search site?
If so then what I said isn't as simple as that. I have done this previously, let me check through my test sites for an example

Apologies what I thought I had done was something different...
If you want to change the default behaviour of OSSSearchResults.aspx I would recommend creating an empty webpart page and adding the relevant search webparts. Search box, results, paging, refiners, federated search etc.
It makes for a much more powerful search experience. Or otherwise create a dedicated search site and use the out of the box results page which you can edit/tweak

Will at some stage put in a more "sophisticated" search option as you suggested. For now we will stick with the default search.

Thanks.
