imac mac mail app - deleted an account / lost the folders? !

I know enough with macs to be dangerous.  Know outlook much better.

friend having problems with mail (comcast account). No new mail coming into her mac.  Gets the mail ok on phone and another mac machine.

on this problem mac, in mail, there's 2 folders under mailboxes - inbox with lots of items, but none in the last few months.  and sent.  Not sure how much was in there, if anything.

a bunch of folders below that in a subfolder - 'on my mac'.  from what I could see, the problem account was set as pop.

I deleted the account to recreate it.  It went away in the account list of preferences, but so did the inbox and sent of mailboxes heading.

usually in outlook, you delete an account, things stay in outlook.  went into the trash and there was a mail folder in there, but very small files for sent and inbox.  was this really imap? That list of emails (over 2000) - where do you think those actual emails are / were? Is there a way to get that list back?

You might be able to recover it to an external drive using DataRescue III

If the account was imap just recreating the account should work, but not if it was pop3

any thoughts on why would it delete the emails / folders?  It really looks like it was pop.  I know in outlook the files stay when you delete an account.

Doesn't work that way on the Mac. When you delete an account, it deletes everything associated with it.
