if you happen to use wi-fi in public spots each day, should you be concerned about your web passwords like gmail etc.

Yes you should

Most public WiFi hotspots are open, making it easy peasy to eavesdrop on traffic, and all logons running unencrypted (smtp, ftp, http) can easily be captures.

Makse sure you login using https, and consider deploying some sort of VPN if possible.

Gmail use https so that's not the worst

ANd one thing people tend to forget; do you know if your app traffic from your phone is encrypted??? perhaps you facebook app sends login in clear text :-)

You should be concerned about any connection in a public spot. The issue is not restricted to passwords.

Make certain you have a TOP grade commercial anti-virus suite and make sure the firewall is properly enabled.

If you are using Windows 7 or 8, make sure you have your Network Connection attached to Public and NOT Work/Home. This increases security.

If you are up to it, use your own USB internet stick. That is what I use.
