mac mail

When I close out mac mail and open it again all of my emails begin opening individually.  The only way to get back to the inbox is to click on window - message viewer.  This works fine but when I close out of mail and go back in all of my inbox emails begin to open again.

In System Prefs> General, tick the box for "close windows when quitting an application"

are you talking sys prefs in mail or mac os x?  There is a preferences in mail but there is no close windows tick box under the general tab

Looks like you are using an older version of the system software. Pull down the Apple menu to About This Mac and let us know what system software you are using.

Try cold booting while holding down the Command-Option-p-r key combination until you hear the startup chime a third time,
