Contecting HP procurve switch to 3Com switch.

I am having a spanning tree issue trying to uplink an HP3500y switch to a 3com 5500G-EI switch that is being used as a router and is the root (5500G) on our spanning tree network. When I go to connect the HP3500Y to the 5500G, my 3com 5500G reports that it is receiving different format of BPDU packets! Please change BPDU format configuration.
I understand the concept of spanning tree, but not an expert. What do I need to do on the HP3500Y switch to change its spanning tree format?  All that I have done is enable spanning tree on the switch.
Attached is the error message that I am receiving.

do you have web interface to this..  if so you need to change the state to learning or forwarding under stp link which should show stp bridge and then port
