What is an oracle package and why would I use it?

In a nutshell:  It's a collection of related objects.

You use it to 'bundle' related objects into a single container.

It also makes grants easier.  Say you have 10 functions and procedures that specific users need to access:  Put them all in a package, grant them execute on the package and they can now all use all 10 objects.

Since you are new to Oracle, I suggest you spend some time in the Concepts guide.
