Cannot download using internet explorer

hi all,

have tried IE 7,8 and 9 but cannot download any file, from any site.

error

Unable to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

I have tried resetting IE using inetcpl.cpl
I have tried creating regedit entries for machine and user BypassSLL and BypassHTTP.. nocache
Security in internet zone is set to low, downloads of files are allowed.

Please, any other ideas very welcome. I am about to give up computers and go and live in a commune.

thanks
gareth

PS - other browsers are not an option as client uses a site which only allows IE.

These days almost all communes use computers. Better stay home.  ;-)

Try:

(1) Disable all addons, toolbars, and download helpers.

(2) What hppens in safe mode?

(3) Scan you PC for virii and rootkits.

(4) Restore your computer to an earlier time.

(5) Uninstall IE; restart; reinstall IE.

(6) Do a repair install of your OS.

Do you get an error? Is there any sort of firewall in place?

thanks for the quick input

1 - done, no help
2 - interesting, give me 10 minutes
3 - done
4 - I will give this a go
5 - done
6 - grrrrrrrrrr..... Bill Gates

A little more info.

this is happening on all PCs in domain. All PCs worked fine until install of new 2012 server with AD, previously a Workgroup. Added machines to domain and they 'broke'!

IE settings pushed out by GPO.

thanks

Which IE settings are being pushed by the GPO?

Update

Logging on locally to the PC with previous Workgroup user, all works fine.

Have removed GPO and set all IE Control Panel Security/Pop up/SmartScreen settings to be the same on the domain user as the local user.

still no joy.

Which page is 'commune' in the phone book??

ve30fa - previously set the template to low and also the allow download as stand alone setting.

Q: "Which page is 'commune' in the phone book?"
A: Look for the listing in "K".  ;-)

Which question should we respond to?

A clean install of Server 2012 and a new computer joined to it does NOT change any of the IE properties.

hi VE3 - from your other post

Setting the internet zone to low is a mistake.
Reverting to IE8 is not justified in this scenario.
I'm guessing that windows updates is also failing, please confirm.

Can you download from the Domain controller?
What are the client DNS settings?  only pointing to the Domain controller? or do you have additonal entries (should only point to the domain controller)

You've done something that I haven't seen on the DC. If you run dns tests in the DNS server does it pass both tests?

Any appliances between the internet and your internal network?

download from domain controller - I will check
client dns pointing to server, server forwarder to router, router to ISP
DNS tests pass
no appliances.

thanks

download from DC

as it is 2012 foundation I am not really sure how I can prove this as it does not have IIS?

Hi All,

Thanks for all your input, managed to find an answer on technet.

IE would not download and could not open downloads either, ie CTRL+J would not work. This was only 1 user as another user on the same machine worked fine.

Therefore..... profile issue.

By exporting from the working users registry and importing in to the broken registry all now works.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Reg importer does complain when importing but just click ok.

Thanks again
