Copy the file (company.QBW) to a local directory on the machine that has QuickBooks 2013. Make sure you do not delete the original file.

Open QuickBooks and close any open company (but do not close QuickBooks). In QuickBooks, File, Close Company will close any open company and leave QB running.

Now you see a large center Window in QB. From that window, choose Open a Company and then in the navigation window that opens (standard Windows) navigate to the folder where you placed the .QBW V2006 file.  Click on Open.

At that point, QB should try to convert the file to the new version. Follow the prompts (they are simple) and see if the file converts. It should unless something is wrong with it.

Thanks but it says that because the old file is 2006 It needs to be upgraded to the 2007/2008 version first. I also says to install a version of 2007/2008 first to do this and to get that version from the:"Quickbooks 2012/13 upgrade resourse CD" which I can't find (Did not come with the full version bought?). Since I am currently in Vanuatu doing this installation I can't ring support (only a 1800 number available... useless over here).
Do you know where I can download that CD please?

I wasn't certain. Some older QB files need an intermediate upgrade to get to a much newer version. I have seen that with files earlier than V2006 and since then, I have required my clients to keep up to date to avoid these issues.

I think you will have to contact Intuit Support to do this upgrade because it is so old. They should be able to provide you with the resource CD. Their normal download links are just for the current product.

On this link below, there is an email support link. In the absence of 1-800 service, you will need to email them. You do need V2008 to be able to do a conversion.  That time frame is when Intuit converted from flat file to database client server. That is why the intermediate step.

You might see a different link in your geographic area.

Thanks again. I downloaded a trial version for 2007/2008 and managed to restore a file to that level. Am now updating to 2013. Fingers crossed.
Will let you know.
