For the scenario planned 20 users from a newly acquired company will be provisioned with say @company1.onmicrosoft.com addresses on our new 365 tenant. if we then, once ready link our on premise to 365 to do a coexistence migration will these users created remain if we use dirsync and adfs or will this delete all existing accounts on the tenant and replace with the dirsync users?
If it doesn't delete is it then also easy to relink them to on premise new AD accounts or do they stay as kind of orphan accounts?

The dirsync process will match users based on UPN. BUT, there is also the so-called SMTP matching, which will link them based on the primary SMTP address. More details here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2641663

If both the UPN and the primary SMTP address differ, it will simply create new accounts, it cannot delete any account that is not being synchronized with the local AD. You can delete them manually if you want, but I guess you are not looking for that option :)

So, if you want to MATCH them, make sure either UPN or primary SMTP are the same.
