So let's have a guess: you are using WSUS? And your WSUS is 3.0 and does not have the updates installed that are needed for feeding 2012?
Or are you using internet update?

What does windowsupdate.log say?

And my question about C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log? Open it at the client and see if you find useful hints. If you don't understand what it shows, upload it here.

the updates managed to get installed after installing one by one for a start. after the majority of updates get updated, the rest behind runs faster. is this normal?

I have seen this once. Kind of irritated me, but just once.
Updates take long sometimes, updates for dotnet for example may seem to take several minutes each, while some windows updates only take seconds.
