Is that possible to develop portal features uisng websphere application server instead of websphere portal server?

I would like to create websphere application server with portal features  instead of uisng websphere portal server.

Could anyone give me the gap analysis of websphere application server and websphere portal server to develop portal features in WAS?

Possible?  Yes...

WAS is an application server.  I'll run any application you build designed to run it in.  WAS is not an authoring or development tool - it is an application server framework for running J2EE applications.

WebSphere Portal Server is a web portal development and deployment framework that depends on and runs in WAS (Portal Server actually includes WAS as a component.)

WAS and WPS aren't similar products, so the idea of a "gap analysis" doesn't really apply.

It is like trying to compare Microsoft Windows 7 operating system to Microsoft Excel.

I'd suggest you do some reading on WPS to determine if it is a fit for whatever project you have in mind.  If it is, and you need even a fraction of the functionality it provides, you're probably better off using it than building all of that yourself.

Here is a quick introduction to WAS and WPS:

Hope that helps.

Happy to help.  WebSphere product line is big and confusing.  Sometimes it is hard to figure out where a specific product fits.
