Solved

I'm appearing 'offline' to my contacts, but I'm definitely 'online' on my end.

I'm appearing offline to my contacts on google chat. This occurs on Chrome, Trillian, Pidgin, and the Android Hangout app.

According to my status in Gmail, and on Trillian I am online, so there shouldn't be any reason for me to appear offline.

I am not blocked by them in google plus, and we've attempted to clear the cache and cookies with no success.

Let me know if you need any other information.

Could be your using a different version to others?
This occurs on Chrome, Trillian, Pidgin, and the Android Hangout app.
This used to apply with messenger but that is now gone.
Is Invisible mode checked? is outdated to 2008.
Have you cleared your history in your different browsers?
Try these take a look a through what they tried as it seems everyone was experiencing it, make sure you have updated everything.
Since MS and Google have kinda joined  you need a Google+ and a Microsoft account, it's all still pretty daunting to me as well.
But one solution found below link
Uninstall Google Hangouts from phone. Open Google Talk/Hangouts on phone.  Sign into Talk/Hangouts on phone. Sign out.

Thanks so much for the help! I'm going to try your suggestions and get back to you.

I'll ask my friend to uninstall google hangouts. I'll also ask them to remove me from their contacts and then re-add me.

None of my contacts are appearing offline for me - but I appear offline to them.  I do not have invisible mode checked. It's very confusing.

I have cleared my browser cookies, cache and history and my friend has also done so. There was no change.

YAHOO! I figured it out!

I had turned off the notification option in Hangouts - so I wouldn't have to hear the *ping* every time someone IM-ed me. This made me appear offline to any contacts that I did that with.

Now I'm back online!

Thank you so much for providing those links. One of the comments in the links lead me to turn on the notifications which fixed the problem!
