Microsoft Server 2012 Virtualization with RDS Issue

As per the best practices according to Microsoft when installing a virtual desktop environment you should not add the physical host to the domain. Well that's great in all but I only have one server and would like to run RDS server role on the host but it will not allow me to do so until it is added to the domain. If i add it to the domain upon reboot, the VM that is the DC will not boot before the host and the physical host will be stuck looking for the DC to contact. Any suggestions on how to deploy RDS with only one server.

to follow best practices to the letter
The host doesn't need to be a member of the domain.
then you have 2 vm's one being the DC the second having the rds role as a member server.

You can do this even with standard as it allows for 2 instances and one can be the management server and not be counted.  If you add any more roles to the physical host then you are limited to 1 VM
