Amazon AWS EBS Snapshots

This is a pure curiosity item. Whenever I create an EBS volume in AWS, I have the option to generate it from a snapshot. There are hundreds of misc snapshots in the drop down with no real description...what are these?!?!

They are full operating systems that are preconfigured by Amazon and available for you to use to save time (you don’t have to install the OS from scratch). The volume that is created at launch time contains a full copy of the OS and the necessary configuration to run that instance.

For example if you wanted your EBS volume to run Linux CentOS 5.6 64bit (http://www.centos.org/).
Instead of installing it from scratch you choose the fifth item listed in the screen-shot and continue. When you complete the steps your EBS will have the OS already and it will be ready to use.
