Google indexing problem

In Google Webmaster tolls I have done a "Fetch as Googlebot" which is shown as a success.
But when I click on "Submit to index" button I get this response:
"There was an error processing your request."

This is the first time I have encountered this and I have gone through this process many times without a problem.
I have no idea what to do next to fix this.
Can you help please?

Have u submitted proper sitemap.xml file of the website. If not then submit that will resolve it.

There is an outstanding issue regarding the sitemap.xml.   Under Optimization - Sitemaps there are two errors coming up.  This is because a sitemap generator had generated a sitemap.xml and had linked it to an index.xml file which was hidden in a sub directory.
This was showing up as an error dated 12 June.
I removed this file from the sub-directory on 23 June.  On the same day I set up a proper sitemap.xml.
I did a Fetch as Googlebot to refresh the crawl - hence the problem I have raised in this post.
I think I am correct in saying that Googlebot only accesses the cache.
Question:
Am I correct in thinking that I have to wait for Google to re-crawl my site to find the new sitemap.xml.
Question: Do you have any idea of what the lapse time for this might be?
