LAN network mapping

What is the best way to locate the IP address devices on a LAN?  I have used several Android apps which map out the IP addresses it sees, along with the device type, based on the MAC.  However, many devices, such as WAPs with static addresses still need to be mapped and do no show up on scans I have done.
Is there a GUI program or command line tool that can be used by a beginner?

setup spiceworks on your computer.  Put it on the lan and then do a scan and you will find the info such as ip address, mac address, software installed, etc
