SBS 2008 unable to check for Windows Updates

Sophos AV had to be installed on an SBS 2008 server.  this particular server had never been patched before.  Before i could install sophos, i had to patch the server.

I got the server up to Server 2008 SP2 and installed WSUS 3.0 SP2.  All of a sudden, Windows updates displayed a mesage

Windows cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running.

It turned out that the server had a myraid of malware and virsues.  Removal of these viruses and the contents of c:\windows\softwaredistribution hasn't fixed the issue.

For bit service  try following

sc create BITS binpath= "c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" start= delayed-auto Then either restart, or go into Services (run: services.msc) and restart it yourself.
