Exchange 2010 SP3 upgrade failed. Information store and transport service will not load.

We have just carried out the Exchange Sp3 upgrade on our single SBS2011 server. The upgrade failed at the mailbox role, with the following error :-

The suggested link for help no longer provides any information, and our e-mail is currently down, and are desperate to get it operational. Can anyone advise what we need to do to resolve it.

Is it possible to step this back to sp2? We just need our server operational. I have carried this out on a number of servers previously without problem, so presumed this would just be a simple case of running the upgrade and restarting.

Have you tried to reboot the server and verified that all Exchange services are UP?
You should be able to re-run the SP install but what steps have you already tried, if any?

I have re booted and the information store just says starting. The transport service was not started, but a manual start resolved this.

I have not tried anything else yet, but need to get it runing again ASAP.

Check the permissions on the links i sent, seems to be what you are seeing which would be explained if SP3 didnt complete successfully.

I have just run the policytest.exe and it gave the following results :-


C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Bin>policytest

This tool will check every domain controller in the local
domain to see if the "Manage auditing and security logs"
privilege granted to the "Exchange Enterprise Servers"
group by DomainPrep has replicated to that DC.  If the
policy change has not yet replicated to all DCs, then
you should avoid making policy changes on any DC that
has not received those changes yet.

You must have Domain Admin rights to run this tool
successfully.  If you see an error that says:
  !! LsaEnumerateAccountRights returned error 5 !!
then you don't have permission to open the LSA on the
given DC.

I am not very comfortable with this, as I do not want to create more problems. I did run the command in an elevated command prompt, and I do not understand what this is telling me!

Any advice?

The problem was caused by one GPO, the specific setting is:

Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment\Manage auditing and security log

I have read through the :- http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232060(v=exchg.80).aspx document, but I am a little concerned as the setup /domainprep seems to be a rather significant step.

This is a working server (or it was till I ran the upgrade) and I am concerend that this may affect other things.

Am I overcomplicating matters? Will it just reset the settings to allow the store to mount?

Why would this happen when we are just installing an upgrade?

Ok open active directory Group Policy Management and edit the default domain controllers policy.
Navigate to Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\UserRight Assignment and find the Manage auditing and security log.
Double click it and make sure Administrators and DOMAIN\exchange servers is in the list where DOMAIN is your netbios domain name.
Reboot the server and that may solve the problem! :)

Just while I do that, I noticed in the event log the following error :-

Active Manager failed to mount database Public Folder Database 1900856347 on server SBS2011.hds1.local. Error: An Active Manager operation failed with a transient error. Please retry the operation. Error: Database action failed with transient error. Error: A transient error occurred during a database operation. Error: MapiExceptionExiting: Unable to mount database. (hr=0x80004005, ec=1005)

Not sure if this is the same issue or not, but thought I would add it.

Yes from what i have read its all pointing to permissions problems which may have been corrupted or messed up during the SP install.

Just another issue. I started are installation of the Sp3 some time ago, as one recommendation Ifound was to restart the server and re run sp3 setup.

It was proceeding OK until it hit the mailbox roll, where it progressed to around 50%, and now it is just sat there. It has been working on this particular element for over 1 hour now, and I am not sure what to do.

I cant restart the server until it has completed or failed, so I am just waiting.

Any ideas?

Just read another article where somone else had this issue. Thet stopped the information store service and it completed ok. Had he not done this apparently, it would just sit there for ever.
 
Unfortunately, our information store has a status of starting, and all of the options to stop, start etc are all greyed out. How can I get round this??

What a pain.

OK. I have restared the server having made the changes to the GPO, but unfortunately, we still have the same problem.

The exchange Transport service started ok, but the information stor still fails to start.

When I run the policytest.exe we still get the same error as previously stated.

Any ideas??

I also see these in the system log :-

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service terminated with service-specific error The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid..

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 5000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

Any ideas.

OK. This doesn't look very good to me but you can try this to see if the IS will come up.
You will have to check the database and log files to make sure neither are corrupt.

This guide will show you how to check first, before doing any type of repair.

OK - Thanks to all.

I found a solution, and that was that AVG was trying to scan the Information Store. Not quite sure how this happended as we had the usual exclusions set, but it prevented the IS from starting up for some reason.

Once the virus scan registry key was dissabled, the information store started straight away.

I then have to re install SP3 to comoplete the upgrade.

Thanks to all who tried to help.

I would liked to have shared the points with people who have tried to help, but when I did this last time, I was told not to do this unless it resolved my issue. So bearing that in mind, I will have to accept my own solution.

If there any objections to this, please advise.

Just one question though, when you did the SP3 install did you stop the AV?
It is ALWAYS advisable to stop AV when installing any for of update, patch or service pack.
