I was trying to install update SP 3 to my Exchange 2010 server which is still at SP1 Rollup 8.  the installation failed with this error.

***Couldn't remove product with code 4934d1ea-be46-48b1-8847-f1af20e892c1. Fatal error during installation. Error code is 1603***

I have logged the install attempt and pasted the results below.  I have tried to re-apply the oldest roll-up pack I have and I still get the error.  My question is - can this be fixed by finding the msi, msp and folders on another exchange 2010 server and copying them back to my c:\windows\installer folder?  Or what would my best course of action be?

I had looked at that post, but I did not do that as the error was different.  I'm not getting any fatal errors as in that post, but do have files that can't be found.

Due to some other hands in the exchange server - the needed files were deleted from the c:\windows\installer folder.

Sadly no recycled items.  Based on the log, I believe it identifies the missing files and have the names saved off in excel.  And yes it was manual.   I did just find this article and was investigating if that might be a way to proceed.  http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12390096/msp-file-extracts-only-files-that-belong-to-new-components

I will have to wait until the weekend to give it a try as I can't have the server down during the week.  I'll update this then.  If anyone else has any different ideas before then, let me know.

Finally solved.  I simply renamed the downloaded exchange updates to the smaller msp file it was looking for based on the log filed created.  Exchange2010-kb2529939-v3-x64-en.msp became 48d4af3.msp.   This was all that the SP needed to proceed with the install.

I did have another issue during the language pack installation - it errored because it did not have permission to the ....\v14\scripts\sv folder.  The folder was inaccessible and I could not take ownership of it.  No processes had it locked.  After a reboot I discovered it was not even there.  So I manually added the folder with the correct permissions and re-tried the install.  This worked.  I am finally on SP3.  Yea.
