Recovery Storage Group is safe and easy to use. Follow these directions from symantec. They explain it how to do it:

http://www.symantec.com/connect/articles/how-restore-exchange-2007-mailbox-store-tape-using-backup-exec-12

http://www.trainsignal.com/blog/exchange-server-2007-recovery

The directions are pretty simple and should not take long. Yes You can export the mailbox to a PST with third party tools like OnTrack Professional, but that is not free.
