installing enet card driver dell 4700
Hello: requesting installation instructions & a link to the right/working ethernet card (built into mobo, will call it "card" anyway) driver for a dell 4700 tower. This is complicated by 3 factors:
-I don't have the dell restore disk for this model. I did use a restore disk from a 4600c to wipe/re-install wXP home. But the model of ethernet card of the 4600c is a 10/100 LOM.
-I downloaded the correct driver for the I pro/100 VE (on the 4700) & tried to install:
- from dell -- failure. D/L right from the dell 4700 support site.
-from intel- "success" except that when I try to update the driver in dev. mgr. (dm) & even tho I find the correct file, the card remains in "?" yellow.
I also have a straight wXPhome install disk. I tried searching that too. Please note all XP disks are legit w/product keys. It's just the client & me don't have the Dell disk for the 4700 (key is on the PC).
Thank you.

Can you post the Dev-Ven number?

Thanks, no. In dm driver details, "ethernet controller", it says "no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device." The physical ethernet jack on the mobo is stamped "LS100-0502 Falco". I can't see what is imprinted on the mobo by the jacks.
I'm just wondering. If the intel install exe "r105786.exe" which I'm guessing is the right driver(s) for this "card", says it's successfully installed...where? I've tried pointing the install wiz to the downloaded r105786.exe, but all I get back is the wXP needs to connect to the internet to get the software. Thanks.

a) where are you? In device mgr? As stated, dm does not recognize the "card" so it does not call it anything.
b) I cannot tell where you took a picture of the device, because it is in cyrllic, I think, which I do not read. Thank you.

But you said that you do have an 'Ethernet Controller' listed, correct? That would most likely be it. Yes, Im sorry. In devuce manager, right click and choose properties. Then go to the tab shown and get the jumber. If you do not have thwt, then anything in Other Devices.
ASKER
As you noted, it is not found in "ethernet controller", but in "other devices." But there are no details or further information.

It's been many hours since I posted and only 1 person has offered a solution. Does that mean
-given the number of points I think it's worth, then no one else is motivated to answer, who might know?
-the only, or best solution is to replace the lost repair CD from Dell? Intel's site, as stated, seems of little help so far.
Thanks.

You make no mention of which chipset driver you installed on the system. Unless you installed the correct one for that motherboard, no matter what you do, even with the corerect driver, it will not work. Is it using the 4600 chipset driver instead of the 4700?? If so, you NEED to install the correct one.
btw... There is/was a dell recovery partition on that system. It uses built-in symatec restore and would have been accessed by hold ctrl-F11 at boot. You have most likely removed it with the restore you have done... then again, maybe not. try it and see what happens.
If it works, it returns the system to an "out-of-box" condition.

Also.. depending on how bad and how fast you want to get this system working properly, you can order the Dell Dimension 4700 Recovery CD for $26.99 from here:
www.restoredisks.com
You can pay for overnight shipping as an option. You really, really need to get the correct drivers and restore it properly if you expect it to work correctly.

In the meantime, will be trying 3DP.
Thanks.

PCsolutions50501 had the key fix: 3dpnet. Why the install of a broadcom set for an intel builtin lan plug worked puzzles me, but it works. From that the rest followed.
While nobus' instructions for id'ing the ven id was not helpful here, it was instructive, hence pts.
It is only "good" & not "excellent" because it took a day to get the key fix, & also I figured on own to order (again, free - but we'll see if Dell comes thru) the repair discs specific for the pc. But I learned about 3dp.
Thank you for the replies. The PC has been upgraded to its max for wXPhomeSP3 & so far the problem for which I got it to fix, has not recurred.
