Windows 2000 Inaccessible Boot Device after Ghost cloning
I have an old Windows 2000 system with a failing hard drive, which I decided to replace (still works). The drive is a 160GB Western Digital; the replacement is a 500GB Western Digital. After Ghosting (Ghost 11.5.1) successfully from the 160 to the 500, the 500GB drive will attempt to boot into Windows 2000, but then blue screens with Inaccessible Boot Device. I have Ghosted with the -fdsp switch, done partition to partition, but no luck. How do I Ghost (or use any other cloning tool) to make this new drive successful?
Looking forward to the fix...
Thank you

Is the error with BSOD 0x0007b?
Does your motherboard support such drives at all?

To nobus: Even a disk to disk clone fails; this would include all partitions (even hidden).
To noxcho: It is indeed the 7b BSOD. The motherboard sees and utilizes the hard drive just fine; it is only the cloned Windows 2000 install that has issue.

>> cloned Windows 2000 << verify if the sata driver is installed on this partition
So, in BIOS do you have there SATA HDD interface or IDE compatible interface?

I am not sure of the controller type as I am not near the system currently. What I do know is that the existing 160GB hard drive is SATA; I am not going from IDE to SATA...but SATA to SATA. So I'm not sure how the controller would be at issue here.
Ceck if it has been changed. The 07b error points to missing driver for boot disk. It could happen that HDD mode in BIOS changed.

The BIOS hasn't changed; in fact I changed the SATA controller to "Compatibility" just to see if that works...and it doesn't. I have since changed it back to "Enhanced" as it was set before.
Ok, so the system boots ok when you boot it from old drive and have the new one connected, right?
ASKER
Yes it boots fine.

I found my own solution, and that was using the open source "CloneZilla". With the correct switches, I was able to clone the original drive to the 500GB drive and have it boot correctly.
I sometimes wonder why I pay to use this service, but your efforts are noted and therefore am splitting the points between nobus and noxcho.
Thank you for your time.

well - personally i have used Ghost the latest time in 2003
now i use the Paragon software
you can use the free B&R to test it out : http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/

The Ghost did either omit setting the active flag or did not copy the MBR and first boot sector correctly.
if it has multiple partitions, you may have missed the boot partition
look for hidden partitions, start with looking in disk management for partitions without a drive letter
