If i pick any of the below NICs, will my X79 specs above be sufficient to run vmware 5.1?
Intel PRO/1000GT Desktop Adapter PCI
Intel 82541PI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Realtek RTL 8111E Yes Realtek 8168 Gigabit Ethernet
Intel Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter PCI-e
I'm opting for super silence machine compared with noisy server.....i have two servers (one Dell and One HP) both noisy and bulky....i don't like the noise they generate.....my son thinks a plane is passing by...i cannot blame him :-)

Thanks Hanccocka...how interesting about HP ProLian MicroServers. I have only smaller budget.
The X79 specs above with Intel PRO/1000GT Desktop Adapter PCI should be ready for vmware 5.1, right?

in the UK we purchase Microservers for £69 each!

Thanks Hanccocka.
Wow, that is super cheap. It would be interesting to see the kind of specs that you can get with MicroServers. I gather that is the starting price? I gather it can support beyond 32GB and Solid State Drive and Quad Core processors? So small.......

why do you need all that, when you can build clusters like we do!
There are Dual Core, 16GB Max, low power, support Distributed Power Management, so vSphere powers them on and off, when needed!
they can accommodate 10 hard disks.....(6 SSDs, and 4 conventional disks)
but we use them diskless, and use NFS....

my experience with HP MicroServer is poor.....i'm glad that you find such hardware technology very accommodating for your needs.
My co-worker brought his desktop in the office which we used as Lab. the specs are almost the same with my X79 specs and....
...vm boot up in less than 10 secs...shutting them down is the same
...install O/S on the vm in less than 5 mins...using SSD...
--using the vsphere console on the vm is like being RDP to vm...
...run 8 to 10 vm like Exchange, Citrix, SCCM etc., you hardly notice any performance issue...
I want something simple but kick-ass at the same time :-)
BTW, my colleague is from UK :-)

Depends what you want to test and use. The benefit is they are very low power, and you can create very large clusters with many ESXi hosts to test Clustering and Cloud functions.
If we want to "show off" we have very special workstations for that purpose! that kick-ass, but they cost many thousand's of pounds! (and have 1500 watt PSUs!)
fyi, a usual OS install takes us 5 mins, on a Dell 2950! (without SSD)

@ hanccocka, will the default network interface card as seen from the attached specs would work? I'm using Solid State Drive for the vmware 5.1 O/S and vm O/S...
I'm based in Australia but the vendor that i was dealing with only buy quality....My budget is $2500 AUS
I don't like server because they are noisy...i have poweredge 2900 with 16GB and i hate the noise generated by the fan....
This type of machines, you can barely notice that they are running....
Will the specs below be good enough to run vmware 5.1?
Full specs of the machine......
