Mandatory Profile Query - windows XP and windows 7

Hi experts

In our school we have 2 computer labs.  One lab contains 20 PCs running windows XP that cannot be upgraded to Win7.  The Second lab users PCs with Windows 7.
Both labs are on a domain controller running Windows Server 2008 R2.  Students, teachers and staff are all Users on the AD.

I want to create a mandatory profile that all students must use.  However, student use both labs so I imagine that creating a common profile could be difficult if not impossible.  Can anyone suggest how best to approach this?

Hi,

Mandatory profile will work on both version winxp & win7. You have to configure it in user account properties->Profiles Tab-> In profile path it should include .man at the end of the profile path.

Usage of mandatory profile is that whatever changes the user perform in its desktop will not be saved once logs off his\her session.
Hello.  The advice above is sound but if data is a concern, you may wish to redirect the Documents folders to save work created.

Hi Ve3ofa

Thank you for the link above.  One part of the instruction puzzles me however,
In Step 4, the author states: "Rename the default profile folder as necessary and add .V2 extension to the folder name".  This seems straight forward enough but further down in the article there is an image that shows 2 profile folders - default and default.V2 . This would seem to imply that the author copied and renamed the folder with a V2 extension.  What do you think about this?
xcopy joedoeprofile joedoeprofile.v2 /s/e

do it from the command line and not the gui
Thanks a mil.  That worked great.  Am having a problem with the XP profile creation.  Is there a URL that will provided step-by-step instructions on this?
