Switch layer differences and usage ?

Hi All,

AFAIK, switch typically operates at OSI layer 2 while router operates at layer 3, so I wonder what are the differences in between the Switch which has the layer 2-3-4-5-6-7 switching ?

can someone explains to me ?

Thanks.

ASKER

ah OK, so in this case if a company grows big and requires more switch port due to the many VLANs in use, they use Layer -3 switch ?

Thanks !!
so what about layer 4 switch ? do they separate the traffic between TCP and UDP ?
There's really no such thing.  Like I said before, any switch that operates above layer 3 is a content switch.
Ah Ok, so does this means that content switch is almost the same as load balancer like Citrix NetScaler device ?
